Workforce Development · Michigan & Maryland · Free to families

Five days to find the path that fits.

The 5-Day Career Accelerator is a free career exploration program for youth ages 14–20. Real work challenges, real local employers, and all three pathways — trades, community college, and modern technology — presented with equal dignity and honest data.

What a career exploration program looks like when it's real work.

No tests, no grades, no lectures. Five structured days built around challenges local employers actually face.

1
DAY 1
Kickoff

Cohorts form, first challenges begin. Parents get their own evening session.

2
DAY 2
Real problems

Local companies bring actual work challenges from their industry. Students take them on.

3
DAY 3
Pick a track

Trades, tech, or college track — a half-day deep inside the one pulling hardest.

4
DAY 4
Speed mentors

8 minutes each with local pros who do the work for real. Ask them anything.

5
DAY 5
Capstone

Students present what they built and leave with a Personal Discovery Profile and a 90-day plan.

Three Pathways · Equal Dignity

Every path presented honestly. None pushed.

Each pathway comes with real financial and labor-market data for the region — cost, time to first paycheck, and local demand — so the choice belongs to the student and family.

TRADES / SKILLED LABOR

Apprenticeships and skilled-trade careers — hands-on tracks with earn-while-you-learn routes and strong regional demand.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE / ASSOCIATE

Two-year and transfer pathways — credentials that map to real local employers, without four-year debt by default.

MODERN TECHNOLOGY

Cybersecurity, software, and emerging-tech tracks — exposure to what the work actually is before committing years to it.

Everyone walks away with something concrete.

Students — a Personal Discovery Profile: documented aptitudes, a matched pathway, and a 90-day plan that's theirs to keep
Parents — honest data on all three paths, their own kickoff session, and no agenda pushing any one of them
Schools — aggregate outcome data on career readiness, with the program run for them, not by them
Businesses — a week watching emerging local talent solve their real problems, before anyone's on payroll
Built on the systems that already exist

The Accelerator is a nonpartisan, evidence-based front end to the public workforce systems — not a parallel system. In Michigan it integrates with the Michigan Works! network; in Maryland, with the Division of Workforce Development and Adult Learning, regional WIOA operators, and American Job Centers. Discovery and matching happen here; the existing state infrastructure executes the pathway.
